with CLOSING BIDS AND PARTY: 6-8 PM
In
the spirit of putting forth a “fresh, new face,” the
Windham Art Gallery is holding a 10 x 10 Silent Auction and
Festive Fundraiser in which each of the 29 artist members of
WAG have painted, or otherwise creatively altered, 10” x
10” canvases that will be on preview beginning during
Gallery Walk on Friday, December 1 and continue each day throughout
the week, 12-5 PM, and will culminate in an auction closing
party on Saturday, December 9 from 6-8 PM. The party will include
sumptuous hors d’oeuvres, a cash wine and beer bar,
and the opportunity to take part in a celebratory, festive
event, to purchase affordable art and to support WAG, the
oldest, continuous cooperative gallery in New England.
“There really is no other place like Windham Art Gallery,” Petria
Mitchell, a member of 17 years explained, “it’s a place where artists
can come together, to percolate and bring their ideas into fruition, to have
their work viewed, often for the first time, by their peers and the public.” 29
artist-members from Brattleboro, Newfane, Putney, Saxtons River and other villages
in Southern Vermont, as well as from nearby towns in Massachusetts and New
Hampshire, exhibit their work at WAG while enjoying the company of like-minded
artists who, together, contribute to the extraordinary community of artists
for which the Brattleboro area has become known.
The impetus behind the 10 x 10 Silent Auction is a new initiative by the gallery
to raise funds that will allow WAG to reintroduce itself as a more vibrant
and active presence in the community. The goal is to work toward expanding
gallery hours as well as to become more engaged with the greater community
by holding more events open to the public—young and old. WAG has already
scheduled a Senior Arts Exhibit, and in March, the gallery will play host to
Student Art Month; slide talks and readings are being planned for the winter
and spring.
Robin Stronk, the Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee and a painter and
member of WAG, feels the Silent Auction is “a cornerstone for the growth
and new image of the Windham Art Gallery. We have been very fortunate that
a number of extremely talented artists have joined our membership. We are embarking
on a very dynamic phase in the history of WAG and are proud to be supported
by so many local businesses and to be in a community that recognizes and values
the arts."
In order to place bids, purchase of a $1. bookmark/bid number is necessary.
Please stop by the gallery, call or e-mail for more information. The 10” x 10” Silent
Auction is sponsored in part by Brattleboro Food Co-Op, Brattleboro, Savings & Loan,
Beadniks, Chittenden Bank, C & S Wholesale Grocers, Prompt Image, Tom & Sally’s
Homemade Chocolates, Windham Flowers and Zephyr Designs.
There will also be an exhibition of Small Works by all gallery members that will
be on display the entire month of December.
Windham Art Gallery, a non-profit program of the Arts Council of Windham County,
is located at 69 Main Street in Brattleboro, Vermont. Gallery hours are Thursday
through Sunday from 12:00-5:00 PM and other times by appointment.
